Historically rich, distinct in character

The China Academy of Art has always adhered to the academic thought of "integration and inclusion, innovation in tradition, diversity and interaction, harmony in difference" in the education of international students coming to China. It takes "dual drive of global and local, two-way communication of humanities and science and technology" as the main educational principle, cultivating "four-way" talents with "comprehensive quality, artistic and theoretical understanding, ancient and modern understanding, and Chinese and foreign understanding". It continuously builds the most time-honored destination for international art talent cultivation in China, with the most distinctive professional teaching characteristics, the most outstanding talent cultivation effectiveness, and the most solid disciplinary strength. It also constructs an eastern highland for art education, creation, and research, helping the school to accelerate its construction into a world-class academy of fine arts that embodies the highest level of Chinese cultural and artistic research and teaching.

The China Academy of Art is one of the first batch of universities open to the outside world by the Ministry of Education and the first batch of universities to build a demonstration base for studying in China. In 1978, the university was approved to become one of the first 43 colleges and universities in China with the qualification to recruit foreign students, and in the same year, the International Students Office was established. Since 1980, it has officially recruited international students to China, and it is one of the earliest art academies in China to carry out the training of international students. They were fortunate to meet a group of calligraphy and painting masters such as Lu Yanshao and Sha Menghai, felt the purest traditional art nurturing, underwent strict brush and ink training, and became the first batch of "foreign faces" in the field of Chinese calligraphy and painting. In the 1990s, with the development and growth of our disciplines, the education of international students gradually expanded to various majors such as oil painting, printmaking, sculpture, history theory, design, etc., and international students studied and grew together with their Chinese classmates, laying a solid foundation for our international education.

In the new century, our university put forward the cultural proposition of "multiple interactions, harmony and diversity", as well as the two-wheel drive development strategy of "global-local", and clarified the ideological foundation and core goal of a new round of internationalization, that is, "to fully implement the internationalization strategy with subjectivity, and to create an oriental highland of art education and humanistic thought". Under the guidance of this new idea, the education of international students in our university has entered a new stage of development. In 2000, our university pioneered the world's first theoretical and practical compound art doctoral education, and the first batch of doctoral students included two international students, Rose (Austria) and Oh Soon-yi (South Korea), accounting for one-third of the total number of students. In 2003, the school established the School of International Education, which gradually established a relatively strict academic norms, teaching standards and management system, and achieved leapfrog development in terms of student scale, quality and connotation. In 2013, it was approved by the Ministry of Education as one of the first batch of universities in China to build a demonstration base for studying in China. In 2016, he founded the first all-English art major in China, "Visual China: Chinese Contemporary Art Master's Program Taught in English". In 2017, the university was selected as a national "double first-class" construction university, and put forward the core goal of "building a world-class art discipline characterized by Oriental studies, and creating a new humanistic education system with artistic creation as the core and social aesthetic education as the responsibility".

 Wide field, multi-level

The study abroad work of China Academy of Art has always been closely integrated with the construction of first-class majors and high-quality curriculum resources, and the enrollment majors for international students in China cover most of the national and provincial first-class majors of our university, and all professional courses are open to international students in China. The majors of international students in China have developed from focusing on high-point characteristic disciplines such as Chinese painting and calligraphy in the early 80s of the last century to covering five disciplines, including fine arts, design, architecture, drama, film and television, and art theory, forming a wide-ranging and multi-level education and training system for international students in China.
