China Academy of Art (CAA) welcomes international students to apply for the non-degree Chinese Painting and Calligraphy courses. The courses are taught in the International College, located at the beautiful Xiangshan campus of CAA. With a conscientious and expert teaching team, we provide every student with a high-quality learning experience.
I. Enrollment targets
The courses are aimed at non-Chinese citizens who are interested in Chinese painting and calligraphy.
II. Way of teaching
On-site teaching is conducted in both Chinese and English. The class is small-sized, usually consisting of six to eight students. Those who complete the whole course and finish assignments will acquire a certificate of non-degree Chinese Painting and Calligraphy learning from the International College of CAA.
III. Application timeline
1. The spring semester of the academic year 2024-2025 is from March to June 2025, and the deadline for its application is February 28, 2025.
2. The whole period of the academic year 2025-2026 is from September 2025 to June 2026, and students who plan to join the whole one-academic-year program may apply before August 31, 2025.
3. Short-term learning is also available. Students who prefer a specific learning period may consult the admission office.
IV Course content
The courses are taught in autumn and spring semesters. Each semester includes 18 to 19 weeks, with 20 class sessions per week.
1. Autumn semester
The courses are composed of an introduction to Chinese painting materials, an overview of landscape painting history, basic brush strokes and usage of ink, basic techniques of landscape painting, sketching trees and rocks, creation of landscape paintings, studying fine-brushwork style flower and bird paintings, studying calligraphy master works and signatures, studying Chinese traditional coloring methods, and basic mounting skills.
It aims at cultivating students' basic ability of reading classics, recognizing nature, mastering ink and brush, bringing students an experience of Chinese painting creation, and helping them understand the whole process of Chinese painting creation, from understanding materials to mounting works.
2. Spring semester
The courses are composed of further study of master landscape paintings with a focus on space and time, outdoor landscape sketching, creation of landscape paintings, studying freehand style bird and flower paintings, further study of calligraphy and seal carving, and basic knowledge of ancient mounting styles.
It aims to enhance students’ ability of reading classics, recognizing nature, mastering ink and brush and creating Chinese paintings.
V. Way of application

VI. Fee
Application fee: RMB 800. Non-refundable regardless of acceptance or not.
Tuition fee:
1. RMB 28,000 per academic semester.
2. RMB 52,000 per academic year.
3. RMB 2,400 per week.
4. RMB 9,600 per month.
