IV. Curriculum

The program is divided into two semesters (Autumn and Spring), each lasting 18 to 19 weeks, with 20 teaching periods per week.

(1) Autumn Semester:The core curriculum focuses on the systematic instruction of seal script and clerical script copying and creation, alongside comprehensive teaching of seal carving. As the oldest forms of Chinese script, seal and clerical scripts embody a simplicity and purity of brushwork, while inherently encapsulating the Chinese understanding of spatial order. This is complemented by introductory Chinese painting through the copying of Xie Yi(freehand) flowers and birds, as well as extracurricular activities such as visiting stone inscriptions in the mountains and experiencing the traditional calligraphy and painting tools. These elements guide students to trace the origins of Chinese characters and the logic of their formation, clarify the evolution of scripts, appreciate the principle that "painting and calligraphy share the same origin," and perceive the profound connection between Chinese art and the mountains and rivers of China.

(2) Spring Semester:The core curriculum focuses on the systematic instruction of regular script, running script, and cursive script copying and creation. Evolving from seal and clerical scripts, regular, running, and cursive scripts represent the predominant forms for daily writing and practical use in contemporary Chinese society. Their flexible and dynamic brushwork systems place greater demands on the control of rhythm, structure, and composition. This is complemented by advanced Chinese painting through the study of landscape painting, as well as extracurricular activities such as visiting authentic calligraphy and painting exhibitions and experiencing the art of mounting. These components aim to guide students through the complete developmental trajectory of the five major script forms, equip them with a comprehensive understanding of the creative process behind calligraphic works, and deepen their grasp of the cultural essence embodied in "painting and calligraphy share the same origin" and "calligraphy as a reflection of the heart."
