2026 CAA International Students Short-term Study Tour Admission Guide|The Art of Mounting in Chinese Calligraphy and Painting
China Academy of Art (hereafter referred as CAA), formerly the National Academy of Art established in 1928, is an important comprehensive college with full range of subjects and majors co-funded by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the Ministry of Education and the government of Zhejiang Province. It serves as a recognized “Double First-Class”institution of national high education, with the discipline of Fine Arts listed in the World First-class Discipline Construction Program. In the national assessment of university disciplines, Fine Arts and Design have consistently received an A+ rating, while Art Theory, Drama and Film Studies have shown steady progress. Among the admission majors, 26 majors, namely Chinese Painting, Calligraphy, Painting, Sculpture, Intermedia Art, Art History Theory, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Visual Communication Design, Apparel & Fashion Design, Ceramic Art Design, Animation, Art and Scientific Technology, Product Design, Fine Arts, Art Design, Crafts Art, Industrial Design, Photography, Broadcasting and TV Editing& Directing, Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Relics, Fiber Art, Digital Media Art, Environmental Design, Pubic Art, Film and TV Photography and Production, have been approved of being built to be the national first-class undergraduate disciplines and specialties. Art Management and Art Design in Filming and Theater have been approved of being built to be the top undergraduate disciplines and specialties across Zhejiang Province. The Academy sticks to the point of building the world’s first-class art academy which embodies the top-level of Chinese cultural and artistic research and education. With its main campus located in Hangzhou, Zhejiang, CAA has five campuses, namely Nanshan, Xiangshan, Liangzhu, and Xianghu in Hangzhou, as well as Zhangjiang in Shanghai.
I.Program Introduction
Mounting and framing is a core technique in the preservation and aesthetic presentation of traditional Chinese art, embodying the essence of Eastern artistic conservation and expression. This program, themed “The Art of Mounting Chinese Calligraphy and Painting,” guides students to deeply understand the historical context and philosophical craft of Chinese painting and calligraphy mounting through special lectures, material studies, hands-on mounting practice, and museum visits. Participants will personally experience basic mounting and vertical scroll mounting techniques, comprehend the profound meaning behind “Three-tenths of the art lies in the painting, seven-tenths in the mounting,” and appreciate the unique philosophy of Chinese art preservation and presentation through practice.
II. Enrollment Targets
Non-Chinese citizens interested in the art of mounting in Chinese painting and calligraphy (basic prior knowledge is preferred). Participants must be at least 18 years old and no older than 65, in good physical and mental health.
III. Way of Teaching
On-site instruction, delivered bilingually in Chinese and English.
Small-class teaching: The program starts with a minimum of 8 participants and is limited to 12. Enrollment closes once full.

Session 2 | Paste Mixing & Application | Learning paste concentration adjustment; Mastering paste application for different purposes:margin strips, damask silk backing, and painting core backing. |
Session 3 | Backing the Painting | Full practical operation of painting backing, including spraying water, brushing paste, paper application, and mounting on the drying board. |
Session 4 | Removing from the Drying Board | Leveraging the bamboo spatula for complete removal; mastering the precise procedures of cutting, separating, and detaching. |
Session 5 | Squaring the Painting | Training on methods for squaring the painting and positioning techniques. |
Session 6 | Applying Damask Silk Borders | Full process practice of attaching margin strips and inlaying damask silk; Mastering the basics of decorating and protecting the mounted work. |
Session 7 | Applying the Backing Paper | Applying paste to the backing paper and smooth attachment; Learning the complete process of reinforcing the back, removing excess moisture, and drying on the board. |
Session 8 | Burnishing the Back | Mastering the technique of burnishing the painting back; Learning wax application and stone burnishing to enhance the texture and suppleness of the mounted surface. |
Session 9 | Attaching the Hanging Rods & Bottom Bar | Precise cutting and installation of the top hanging rod and bottom bar; Mastering key techniques for attaching knobs and Reinforcement Strip for final vertical scroll assembly. |
Session 10 | Attaching the Hanging Cord & Finished Works Display | Positioning and threading the hanging cord on the top rod; Learning to tie the traditional “Ruyi” knot; Final work presentation, comprehensive review, and certificate awarding. |

No need for application fee. Fill in the basic personal information and submit the following two materials:
(1) Scanned copy of the “Foreigner Physical Examination Form” (this form is uniformly printed by Chinese health and quarantine authorities, must be completed in Chinese or English). Applicants must strictly follow the required items for examination. Forms missing items, without a photo attached or without a stamped photo overlap, or without the physician’s and hospital’s signatures and stamps are invalid. The examination date should be within 6 months prior to the application submission date. The form can be found in attachment.

(2) Non-criminal record certificate. Submit a valid non-criminal record certificate issued by the local public security authorities, typically dated within 6 months prior to the application submission date. It must confirm a clear record since birth.
VII. Fee
1. Tuition: 8,000 RMB/person.
2.Other Expenses: Accommodation, meals, transportation, insurance, and other personal costs are the responsibility of the participant.
3.Material Preparation: Participants need to prepare their own flat brushes and palm fiber brushes for the course. The academy can assist with purchasing these; the cost is approximately 800-1600 RMB per set (optional, to be registered uniformly after admission).
4.Payment method: complete the payment according to the admission notice. Failure to complete payment by the notified deadline will be considered an automatic forfeiture, and the opportunity will be offered to the next eligible applicant in sequence.
